Hollywood star Jason Momoa congratulates Sri Lanka

Feb 21- Hollywood star Jason Momoa, best known for his role in the movie Aquaman, congratulated Sri Lanka after the island was declared a UN World Restoration Flagship, in recognition of its vital efforts to rebuild and restore the mangrove ecosystems.

In a UN video, Jason Momoa said Sri Lanka was an example on working together to make positive change.

If you are Sri Lankan, living in Sri Lanka or living abroad but left Sri Lanka after the age of 30, you may feel very happy with this endorsement from a Hollywood actor. But the perception they have of Sri Lanka is that it is a beautiful island like what we think of Maldives where people are not very advanced. They don’t know of Sri Lanka for its ancient civilisations, highly educated people, and contributions individual Sri Lankans making in Science, Technology, and Law in foreign countries.

Whilst like Mr. Mamoa, I salute the efforts of all involved in the restoration and regeneration of Mangroves in SOME parts of Sri Lanka, I fear that he has been taken and shown such projects in areas where a scheme of this nature is relatively easy to conduct because there is no human habitation nearby. It would be a far greater challenge for someone to tackle a similar effort in an Urban environment like the Bolgoda Lake, which is fast reaching epidemic levels of pollution from Refuse Dumping Facilities, combined with the infestation of invasive weed species and the uncontrolled, illegal input of effluents from factories and garages. Perhaps it is this challenge that prevents our Environment Authorities from getting involved in Bolgoda. The President's advisor on these matters, his own nephew Mr.Ruwan Wijeywardena, was shown this in the most graphic form possible at one of our Seminars not long ago, but despite many promises, nothing has been done.
