In a shocking incident that took place on Monday (14) at a leading primary school in the Narammala area, a competition over the head prefect position allegedly led one of the contestants to mix poison into the bottles of drinking water of five other students.

The incident was reported when the Grade 10 students consumed the poisoned water and subsequently started vomiting. The girl who had mixed the poison had also consumed a small amount of the poisoned water.

According to investigations, the student had skipped the morning assembly and remained in the classroom, where she had tampered with the bottles of drinking water of her fellow students. The six affected schoolgirls were immediately rushed to the Narammala Divisional Hospital for medical treatment. The schoolgirl responsible for the incident was identified through the school's CCTV footage.

Police have determined that the chemical mixed with the drinking water was a weedicide that is not highly toxic. Fortunately, the six schoolgirls who received treatment are now in stable condition and out of danger. (Pushpakumara Jayaratne)
