Minister of Tourism Harin Fernando has been flown abroad for urgent medical treatment following doctor’s advice.

Minister Fernando said a condition he had in his knee had worsened over the past few days and he had seen his doctors who had advised him to get treatment overseas.

"I participated in the opening of the Hilton Hotel in Yala and attended a TV talk show thereafter. The knee ailment which I had worsened after these two events and I sought doctor’s advice. They requested me to seek treatment abroad and I left the island," he said in a statement.

The Minister said he decided to come out with a statement as some have accused him of avoiding the debate on Easter Sunday bombings. "My stand on Easter Sunday attacks has not changed and will not change," he said. (Yohan Perera)

Wish him a speedy recovery, hope tax payers don't have to foot the bill. They need to get treatment from the health system they have created.

    Wixie Saturday, 23 September 2023 06:40 AM

Flaw in spelling, where to ply por the treatment

    Sambo Saturday, 23 September 2023 06:45 AM

For ministers even for a headache they fly to Singapore for treatment but for the poor they have to suffer without medicine in queues for hours and hours. I wonder who that doctor who requested him to go abroad for treatment.

Kumara Ilangasinghe Saturday, 23 September 2023 07:23 AM

Why, local hospital treatment no good? What about Ayurvedic treatment in Sri Lanka? Politicians must lead by example my friend.

    Lk Saturday, 23 September 2023 07:33 AM

Why abroad ??? Money money money!?? Why doctors not advise to us go for treatment abroad??

    Nimal Saturday, 23 September 2023 07:34 AM

Who cares? Wouldn't he have received better treatment at Keheliya's hospitals now located in close proximity to florists.

Kadija nazim Sunday, 24 September 2023 10:25 AM

And end up in keheliyas mal shaalawe

    KD Saturday, 23 September 2023 07:36 AM

When the Tourism minister has to fly outside Sri Lanka to get medical treatment what kind of message is it sending about Sri Lanka? Rest of citizens should also do this?

This is reality Saturday, 23 September 2023 07:46 AM

No issue in going abroad for medical treatment provided it's not tax payers moneys. In any case he doesnt seem to trust the locally available inferior-quality-after-effects-causing medication yeah!

Orthopedic patient Saturday, 23 September 2023 07:53 AM

What is wrong with our specialist in Sri Lanka? It is not life threating. When will we patients will be treated with same concern.

    Maxwell Saturday, 23 September 2023 08:05 AM

Medical Treatment abroad for MPs and Ministers even for things like knee problems because they know that Treatment available locally for the general public is simply not good enough! Is this unethical practice of governance going to continue?

Sri Lankan Saturday, 23 September 2023 08:07 AM

Get well soon, look after your health dear Minister

    Bushel Saturday, 23 September 2023 08:08 AM

Public doesn't care your presence in parliament. Our concerned is foreign exchange of this country that you are spending . We hope you rest. May be in peace if you are spending our tax payer;s money for treatment

    PC Saturday, 23 September 2023 08:10 AM

Does this indicate that the country's health system is not capable of treating even such a condition in knee?

Poor Citizen Economically Squeesed Saturday, 23 September 2023 08:11 AM

Fly me too for medical treatment. Ammo amauri!

    Terrence K Saturday, 23 September 2023 08:14 AM

Why go overseas for treatment when we have experts who were able to cure COVID by Ayurveda Pani ?

    Yosuf Saturday, 23 September 2023 08:14 AM

Tax payers have to foot the bill of another useless politician while many are looking for local treatment. While our health sector cries for help Politicians enjoy luxury trips abroad .

    sam Saturday, 23 September 2023 08:18 AM

Who is paying for the trip?

Tissa Fernando Saturday, 23 September 2023 08:36 AM

So these guys go abroad for treatment from tax money while people who earn and pay taxes are not having any medicine for simple issues. What a country?

Jude Fernando Saturday, 23 September 2023 08:37 AM

Why can't he go to a local hospital just like all Sri Lankans? After all, in the past all politicians bragged about ours being a world class medical system.

Heart Patient Saturday, 23 September 2023 08:44 AM

While the majority of working people and the oppressed have continuously been suffering from the lack of life-serving medicine and numerous health issues, these politicians can easily go abroad to get medical treatment for even knee pain! These are the politicians who endorsed bloody statements like "Why funeral parlours are located near hospitals" (by Min Rambukwalle)!

Samson de Silva Saturday, 23 September 2023 08:51 AM

While getting treatment for the knee problem, why not also consult a psychiatrist about your mental issues as well?

Dr. Quacks Saturday, 23 September 2023 08:54 AM

Why Minister Harin Fernando does not thrust medicines given at the Sri Lankan hospitals of Hon Minister of Health Dr. Rambukwella whom he voted to keep in his job?

    Gamini Saturday, 23 September 2023 09:11 AM

So there are no good doctors in SL to treat a knee problem

    ishi Saturday, 23 September 2023 09:14 AM

Sure, why not. You can go abroad to treat cold and flu next time as long as the poor Sri Lankan tax payers are paying for it.

Tax Payer Saturday, 23 September 2023 09:33 AM

Just for a knee ailment Harin's doctor has advised foreign treatment for him. Who is this doctor and where is this foreign treatment ?

Trevor Perera Saturday, 23 September 2023 10:03 AM

Harin, the very fact that you have gone overseas to treat a "knee injury" is a vote of NO CONFIDENCE in the Health Minister Rambukwella, even though you voted in parliament to defeat the No Confidence motion. Aren't the Sri Lankan hospitals and Doctors good enough for you. Why are you wasting valuable foreign Exchange when the country needs every Dollar to pay off its foreign loans which it has defaulted on.

    Danny Saturday, 23 September 2023 10:38 AM

Local hospital can’t treat knee issue even or politicians have doubts of our health system

    Chula Saturday, 23 September 2023 10:40 AM

Why big corporate invite politicians for opening ceremonies , we will not come out with this mentality of worshipping leaders .

ELDERLY CITIZEN TAX PAYER SINCE 1975 Saturday, 23 September 2023 10:45 AM

YOU GO FOR FOREIGN TREATMENT... In the absence of medicine availability I ordered via Ebay; it is NOT RELEASED by postal customs asking for document after document...Why OH! Why?.....SIRI LANKA.......

Karalasingam Sivalingam Saturday, 23 September 2023 10:54 AM

Most of our Cabinet ministers, former Presidents were seeking medical treatment overseas, since they've money, power, facilities and recognition, but we have some of the world best doctors in SriLanka, even foreigners patronise these doctors, the government should give emphasis to improve our medical system to acceptable standards.

    Sam Saturday, 23 September 2023 11:22 AM

Great news, Sri Lankan Tourism minister promoting medical tourism of another country.

Dukhinda Jayawardena Saturday, 23 September 2023 11:30 AM

“ "I participated in the opening of the Hilton Hotel in Yala and attended a TV talk show thereafter. The knee ailment which I had worsened after these two events and I sought doctor’s advice.” At these two events,Mr Hardin Fernando must have been talking through his knee. WISH HIM A SPEEDY RECOVERY Dukhinda

Premalal Perera Saturday, 23 September 2023 11:53 AM

Weak kneed and good for nothing. Is there treatment for those ailments?

    DJ Saturday, 23 September 2023 12:10 PM

    What a Joke. People's money

Volker Metzger Saturday, 23 September 2023 01:39 PM

I've never heard of someone having to fly abroad because of a knee problem! What's wrong with Minister Harin!? Does he have a damaged meniscus or knee arthrosis because he has been doing sports for decades (e.g. playing tennis or football)!??? Everything can be clarified orthopedically, using an MRI, and treated accordingly! In the worst case scenario, he will receive a knee prosthesis, which an experienced Sri Lankan doctor can install! Does he distrust the performance of his own doctors!? But then he gives them a bad report and at the same time demonstrates what a bad state the healthcare system is in in his own country! What do poor people do when they get seriously ill!!!???

Bryan Ekenaike Saturday, 23 September 2023 01:43 PM

Can someone please explain this: a lady I know, who is a domestic worker (servant) had a knee replacement in the Kalubowila hospital recently. Naturally, she did not have the millions to have the operation done, but it was done nevertheless. She appears to be getting about ok. Even if she was used by the medical profession for furthering their practice, she is ok. So what the problem here with the Minister, going overseas for a simple knee aliment??. Can't our fellows do it. After all its been said that the medical students get free education and have an obligation to practice here in SL, But these fellows in Govt go overseas for a simple aliment, and to further complicate matters, the President says that the Global North must compensate SL for taking the medical profession from SL. Cannot understand the logic here.

    Owen K Saturday, 23 September 2023 03:38 PM

Well if the own ministers don't believe in their countries state or medical situation or what so ever ....then who. It is not correct for him to go for treatments abroad, when others cant or even get visa for such treatments. Then this beautifull country has a long history for ayurvedic medicine and treatments.Even foreigners come here to take those way of help. Not a good example being even a turist minister who makes advertisement for the rich diversity and culture and Ayuvedic tourism.,yet he goes elsewhere about turists, maybe they should go elsewhere too instead?...not a fine example. And for the doctors advise it's a shame the doctors here or is it a friend maybe

    Ram Saturday, 23 September 2023 03:38 PM

The Local Hospitals including national Hospital Colombo are not geared to treat the Politicians. They must take treatment overseas paid by the public purse.

    Ahamed Saturday, 23 September 2023 03:43 PM

Look after your health, we continue to pay our tax.

    Atheist Saturday, 23 September 2023 03:52 PM

Looks like the invisible hand is at work on the instructions of the Cardinal !

Gunasinha Marabe Saturday, 23 September 2023 04:20 PM

Why? We have better hospitals? Are they for poor people supporting you and the Hora clan? Hope you will not return as a human to this island for the damage you've done!!

    lawson Saturday, 23 September 2023 04:24 PM

Oh Harin you have created a bigger PR problem than what you are trying to avoid!.......... Pathetic! Advice for your knee avoid eating all those weight gaining stuff you get at official functions and your overseas trips using our TAX money!

    rbh Saturday, 23 September 2023 04:28 PM

Simple medical treatment is available there are soldiers fighting the war who are injured by gunshots and cured is the have leg-threatening injuries spotted on one day as Harin knew the church blast in advance he can tell the trail how he got the information even now.

Yu Li Saturday, 23 September 2023 04:30 PM

Anything politicians can do is justified. . Knee treatment overseas as per doctors advise; son studying in US is helping me voluntarily so he can be part of the delegation to the UN so on......the ordinary citizen is always at fault, no justification....

    ANNECUNT Saturday, 23 September 2023 05:48 PM

    Spartacus Saturday, 23 September 2023 05:52 PM

What a pity, knee injuries chances of death are very less. The vermin will be back instead of coming back embalmed in a box.

    Buddhist Saturday, 23 September 2023 05:58 PM

Didn't he vote for Keheliya to remain the Minister in during the no-confidence motion? This means SL Health Care is in good standing under Keheliya, so why should he go abroad for treatment??

    Joshua Saturday, 23 September 2023 09:37 PM

Hope the doctors keep him there for ever. Manusha can be his caretaker

Tissa Fernando Saturday, 23 September 2023 10:26 PM

We are spending money on these useless crooks by sending them abroad for medical treatments. He was aware of the Easter Sunday attacks in advance but kept quiet.

melville perera Saturday, 23 September 2023 10:42 PM

I have the same ailment treated by the same specialist who recommended a highly qualified ayurvedic doctor for immediate relief

Mohamed Marzook Saturday, 23 September 2023 11:01 PM

Maithri went to Singapore while having a knowledge of the Eater Sunday attack. Harin having talked about it so much wants to keep away in the current situation when the conspiracy of the plot is being exposed.

    Zaza Saturday, 23 September 2023 11:42 PM

Whyn't the press tell us where he has gone and to which hospital?

Rip Winkle Sunday, 24 September 2023 12:38 AM

Give the bloke a break, people. The man's suffering with a weakened knee from additional weight gained after excessively eating off the taxpayer since acquiring his ministerial position.

    Neil Sunday, 24 September 2023 03:32 AM

Very good. Cabinet Ministers are VVVVVIP. They should go abroad for medical treatment. Normal citizens should get treatment from local hospitals. Don't complain, you stupid Sri Lankans are responsible for this situation.

Kadija nazim Sunday, 24 September 2023 10:31 AM

    Extravagant benefits of politicians

Simon the Simian Doctor Monday, 25 September 2023 02:32 AM

Harin has gone abroad to receive a newly developed simian brain transplant. This procedure will cure him of his current illness and prolong his life. It's too complex to do in Sri Lanka.

Ariya Fernando Monday, 25 September 2023 05:09 AM

It is funny. The Doctor asked him to go abroad for treatment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Anura Friday, 29 September 2023 06:28 PM

Who is this so called Dr. Who has advised to get treatment abroad? Disgrace for the the Health Ministry as well as Tourism Ministry. Even tourists will think twice visiting SL.

Lenin Peterson Monday, 02 October 2023 03:37 AM

Don’t tell me that Sri Lankan orthopedic surgeons can’t treat his condition. So Sri Lankan government is spending this parasite’s overseas medical bills, no wonder Sri Lanka is bankrupt.
