Minister of Tourism Harin Fernando has been flown abroad for urgent medical treatment following doctor’s advice.
Minister Fernando said a condition he had in his knee had worsened over the past few days and he had seen his doctors who had advised him to get treatment overseas.
"I participated in the opening of the Hilton Hotel in Yala and attended a TV talk show thereafter. The knee ailment which I had worsened after these two events and I sought doctor’s advice. They requested me to seek treatment abroad and I left the island," he said in a statement.
The Minister said he decided to come out with a statement as some have accused him of avoiding the debate on Easter Sunday bombings. "My stand on Easter Sunday attacks has not changed and will not change," he said. (Yohan Perera)

Wish him a speedy recovery, hope tax payers don't have to foot the bill. They need to get treatment from the health system they have created.

When the Tourism minister has to fly outside Sri Lanka to get medical treatment what kind of message is it sending about Sri Lanka? Rest of citizens should also do this?

No issue in going abroad for medical treatment provided it's not tax payers moneys. In any case he doesnt seem to trust the locally available inferior-quality-after-effects-causing medication yeah!

Medical Treatment abroad for MPs and Ministers even for things like knee problems because they know that Treatment available locally for the general public is simply not good enough! Is this unethical practice of governance going to continue?

Why can't he go to a local hospital just like all Sri Lankans? After all, in the past all politicians bragged about ours being a world class medical system.

While the majority of working people and the oppressed have continuously been suffering from the lack of life-serving medicine and numerous health issues, these politicians can easily go abroad to get medical treatment for even knee pain! These are the politicians who endorsed bloody statements like "Why funeral parlours are located near hospitals" (by Min Rambukwalle)!

Harin, the very fact that you have gone overseas to treat a "knee injury" is a vote of NO CONFIDENCE in the Health Minister Rambukwella, even though you voted in parliament to defeat the No Confidence motion. Aren't the Sri Lankan hospitals and Doctors good enough for you. Why are you wasting valuable foreign Exchange when the country needs every Dollar to pay off its foreign loans which it has defaulted on.

Most of our Cabinet ministers, former Presidents were seeking medical treatment overseas, since they've money, power, facilities and recognition, but we have some of the world best doctors in SriLanka, even foreigners patronise these doctors, the government should give emphasis to improve our medical system to acceptable standards.

I've never heard of someone having to fly abroad because of a knee problem! What's wrong with Minister Harin!? Does he have a damaged meniscus or knee arthrosis because he has been doing sports for decades (e.g. playing tennis or football)!??? Everything can be clarified orthopedically, using an MRI, and treated accordingly! In the worst case scenario, he will receive a knee prosthesis, which an experienced Sri Lankan doctor can install! Does he distrust the performance of his own doctors!? But then he gives them a bad report and at the same time demonstrates what a bad state the healthcare system is in in his own country! What do poor people do when they get seriously ill!!!???

Can someone please explain this: a lady I know, who is a domestic worker (servant) had a knee replacement in the Kalubowila hospital recently. Naturally, she did not have the millions to have the operation done, but it was done nevertheless. She appears to be getting about ok. Even if she was used by the medical profession for furthering their practice, she is ok. So what the problem here with the Minister, going overseas for a simple knee aliment??. Can't our fellows do it. After all its been said that the medical students get free education and have an obligation to practice here in SL, But these fellows in Govt go overseas for a simple aliment, and to further complicate matters, the President says that the Global North must compensate SL for taking the medical profession from SL. Cannot understand the logic here.

Well if the own ministers don't believe in their countries state or medical situation or what so ever ....then who. It is not correct for him to go for treatments abroad, when others cant or even get visa for such treatments. Then this beautifull country has a long history for ayurvedic medicine and treatments.Even foreigners come here to take those way of help. Not a good example being even a turist minister who makes advertisement for the rich diversity and culture and Ayuvedic tourism.,yet he goes elsewhere ...how about turists, maybe they should go elsewhere too instead?...not a fine example. And for the doctors advise it's a shame ....to the doctors here or is it a friend maybe

Don’t tell me that Sri Lankan orthopedic surgeons can’t treat his condition. So Sri Lankan government is spending this parasite’s overseas medical bills, no wonder Sri Lanka is bankrupt.
