Grade 1 education reforms to be implemented in 2026

Colombo, April 17 (Daily Mirror) - The Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Ministry has announced that the implementation of Grade 1 education reforms for 2026 is currently underway.

Accordingly, the distribution of activity books relevant to the second and third school terms has already commenced and is scheduled to be completed in all schools by April 30, 2026.

The Ministry Secretary Nalaka Kaluwewa said that awareness programmes on the new Grade 1 curriculum, along with teacher training, have already been conducted for Provincial Primary Subject Directors, Teacher Advisors, Trainers, and Teachers. Provincial Directors have also been instructed to complete any additional required training by May 16, 2026.

Furthermore, the Secretary said that if any schools have been unable to cover the subject content for the first term, Principals have been advised to take necessary steps to complete those sections during the second school term.
