Govt prioritises primary healthcare strengthening to tackle rising NCD threat

Colombo, October 25. (Daily Mirror) - Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa has said that strengthening primary healthcare remains a core priority under the government’s health policy, as Sri Lanka works to curb the growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

Speaking yesterday at the first meeting of the National Council on Non-Communicable Diseases for 2025, the Minister noted that the Arogya Wellness Center Project plays a key role in supporting early detection and care for vulnerable communities at the grassroots level.

“NCDs such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure and mental health disorders are major obstacles to achieving Sustainable Development Goals,” Dr. Jayatissa warned, calling for accelerated preventive measures and improved screening systems nationwide. “Strengthening early intervention is essential if we are to reduce the burden of preventable diseases.”

The meeting, held at the Ministry of Health and Mass Media, brought together senior health ministry officials, medical experts and representatives from several government sectors to evaluate progress and align strategies for the year ahead.

During the session, a special cancer control assessment prepared by experts from the World Health Organization was presented to the Minister, outlining existing gaps and priority actions required to improve outcomes.

The Council agreed to intensify ongoing national NCD prevention efforts, with enhanced cross-ministerial collaboration identified as vital to safeguarding the public against the escalating health threat.
