Colombo, April 21 (Daily Mirror) - The programme of providing free land rights to 2 million is currently underway and steps have been taken to give ownership of 50,000 flats in Colombo to the plantation people.

"We have focused on developing the living conditions of the plantation people and he decision to give land to those people is currently being made.

"We should not be divided politically in this work. If we are divided, we will not see this progress in the country today. We should forget party politics and move forward. Also, we hope to implement some large programmes for the development of this Uva region," President Ranil  Wickremesinghe said.

Ranil Rajapakshe to get votes wants to plant tea in Colombo parks. Shows how desperate he is knowing coming colors no good. What are these workers to do in Colombo other than engage in an age-old profession and kill the tea plantations.

    jayt Monday, 22 April 2024 08:08 AM

His working for the dream of foreign agents who helps him into power and have been behind Tamil for a long period . Remember

    ACA Sunday, 21 April 2024 10:25 PM

Why, government going to have estates in Colombo. These bankrupt politicians make this country further bankrupt with their stupid policies. All other countries try to reduce the urban migration, these stupids make worse decisions to make political gains in elections.

    jayt Monday, 22 April 2024 07:49 AM

They are ruled by foreigne conspirators, so they are following their order to change demographic of Sri lanka to help Tamil Tigers expansion.

Abdul Rahuman Sunday, 21 April 2024 10:29 PM

50,000 flats in Colombo for plantation works. What a foolish decision ? Plantation workers should be given houslng facilities near their work places not in Colombo. Upcpuntry workers are not acclamatised to the Colombo hot and humid weather. Don't know wheather the government is also planming to put special intercity trains from Colombo to their work place. Government is hell bent to do any dam thing to get votes like what is happening now in India. But the modern generation are not foolish. Most have already decided to whom to vote. Marwan

    Char Sunday, 21 April 2024 11:02 PM

So they will travel from colombo to plantations daily to work and come back... ???

Balla Donkey Monday, 22 April 2024 01:02 AM

May be provide cars too to go to work

Sam Silva Monday, 22 April 2024 02:06 AM

What a stupid plan. They will spend more money just for travelling daily and protest their daily wages are not enough.

    Puswadilla Monday, 22 April 2024 03:54 AM

They are going to pluck TLeaves from Colombo new flats.

Tissa Fernando Monday, 22 April 2024 08:38 AM

I guess those flats will be sold by them to make money.

Kaka with an extra brain Tuesday, 23 April 2024 10:40 AM

    Whose idea is this ?

Hard Truth Sunday, 21 April 2024 11:58 PM

Slowly and surely, plantation people will integrate into Colombo society and its lifestyle. This will be good, so the differences between Colombo Tamil and plantation estate Tamil will be blurred in the coming generations. Already new generations of plantation workers are not in the plantation sector. Many have moved on. On the other hand, Sri Lanka needs to import a new set of plantation workers from other countries to sustain 'Ceylon Tea'

    Prince Sunday, 21 April 2024 11:59 PM

May suggest to give luxury busses and trains to the workers too as transport. What a desperate idiotic thought this is.

Hard workers Monday, 22 April 2024 12:06 AM

It’s a mistake. The government to give flats in the estate areas where they work. They are Sri Lanka’s backbone.

    Jude Monday, 22 April 2024 12:07 AM

Never heard absolutely ridiculous dumb idea like this one. They're exhibiting that they're imbeciles.

    Gt Monday, 22 April 2024 12:53 AM

Why only now when elections are near, upcountry people need help, rhey can't rely on picking tea all their lives, giving housing in Colombo is good because there are more jobs that will open up, more places to gain some education and qualifications, some estate people suffer immensely, some are injured, old, have kids and husbands abandoned them, such people can't find work in estates, atleast in Colombo there will be more diverse jobs that they can do, this is the only thing good done by this gov

    Lankan Monday, 22 April 2024 01:37 AM

How many generations do you want them to be plantation workers? They need also need to get better. Most of the Colombo workers are from estates. Let them develop themself.

    Ram Monday, 22 April 2024 02:15 AM

All the past governments have been giving lands on deeds to people to get their vote. Soon we will have no land for developmental activity and /or industries. Gifting flats is a foolish decision. They must be given on a reasonable rent or on rent purchase agreements.

Sam Silva Monday, 22 April 2024 02:19 AM

Why don't you provide the politicians residents instead and utilize all their vehicles to transport them daily to the tea estates and back with a driver We are getting stupid by the minute.

Do Perera Monday, 22 April 2024 02:25 AM

The next plan should be start a tea plantation in the Vihara Maha Devi park.

    Gabriella Monday, 22 April 2024 02:32 AM

When the flats are given out, try finding one estate worker living in them. Even Wimal Weerawansa couldn’t think of a scam like this.

    Lanka Monday, 22 April 2024 02:34 AM

I'm confused here. Are the tea pluckers going to travel from Colombo to up country and back every day? Or are they going to start tea plantations in Colombo? Please enlighten us. Stupidity is on the rise in this country!

    GC Monday, 22 April 2024 12:32 PM

Before 1970s, there used to be tea plantation at Wattala where they built the fertiliser corporation. Probably will need to reclaim that land and move fertiliser corporation up country.

    M Fernando Monday, 22 April 2024 09:39 PM

Yes. RW will also build electric high speed train from the 50,000 flats to carry workers to the plantations and back.

    GC Monday, 22 April 2024 02:53 AM

Are there 50,000 unoccupied flats already available in Colombo for this? If not, will this be delivered only in 2048? How big are these flats? Single room with 10 people to a room? On hearing this can even those who wish to vote Ranil may consider changing their minds!

Tea plantation workers support Monday, 22 April 2024 03:35 AM

Ranil and MR think they can fool the people as they did in the past . By giving 10k rice and telling lies and lies they can't fool people now . First give homeless Colombo people their flats and houses. If you are really honest help tea plantation people in their estate and build them houses with some facilities

Sen Rajapaksha Monday, 22 April 2024 03:52 AM

Did I read correctly! Hew wants to move plantation workers to Colombo? Plantation workers may fall for this but other people should ask this question. " Is this RW's economic policy?"

Rex Jarkie Monday, 22 April 2024 06:11 AM

IS THIS A WAY GETTING YOUR VOTES GIMICK

    Lokka Monday, 22 April 2024 06:30 AM

Flower Road is an ideal location for 50,000 flats!!

    Lokka Monday, 22 April 2024 06:30 AM

Flower Road is an ideal location for 50,000 flats!!

    Nimal Monday, 22 April 2024 06:43 AM

I have doubts about the accuracy of this report. My understanding is that these flats would be given to their present tenants and that estate workers would be given some sort ownership of the land that they now occupy or work in. This seems like another election gimmick. However, I am glad that some sort of relief is being given to the estate workers who have been a neglected sector of our community for two centuries.

    Ahamed Monday, 22 April 2024 07:01 AM

No surprise on this as usual RW decision to bring 50000 plantation workers to Colombo.

    SnR Monday, 22 April 2024 07:40 AM

Am I reading right 50000 flats in Colombo to be given free? to plantation workers. And this in a country which was recently declared bankrupt.Who are the current residents and why Colombo. And where is the mandate to strike such a deal.So many in the country at starvation level. And why Colombo. Living conditions have to be developed where they live and work. Will it not lead to divisions as it targets one community not the country? It seems in SL the impossible is possible in politics

    jayt Monday, 22 April 2024 07:46 AM

They are putting foundation to Tamil state in colombo to combine with Tamil Tigers. this oder came from wester supporters of Tamil.

    jayt Monday, 22 April 2024 07:53 AM

Then, Western supporters of Tamil have enough Tamil for next stage of plotting to overthrow sinhalese

End of TEA INDUSTRY,but who cares? Monday, 22 April 2024 07:55 AM

I supported Ranil, assuming that he is not only a matured politician, but also a realistic administrator. But this decision is very greedy and short sighted.

    Sambo Monday, 22 April 2024 08:00 AM

What kind of talk is this? To give estate workers housing in Colombo. Do you mean after work they will have to travel up and down to their homes in Colombo.

    Sakya Monday, 22 April 2024 08:02 AM

Laughable is he talking from his mouth or what multitude of people born and bred in Colombo are languishing in slums and tenement houses in mudukoos without basic living conditions. ignoring their plight and plans to give 50,000 houses for estate workers in Colombo. Are they going to be used as estate workers holiday bungalows. This city is already overcrowded by many outsiders and the infrastructure is in verge of collapsing . Get these things in order nobody wants fairytales

    Arnold Monday, 22 April 2024 08:22 AM

Some one is going crazy it looks like!!

Pradeep Kumar Monday, 22 April 2024 08:36 AM

The Japanese government is giving homes in remote areas to reduce congestion in city life and is working on a sustainable environment for everyone, but these crooked men are attempting to add more congestion to the Colombo city. Instead of giving them a good wage they deserve for daily life and a free land for their own with a decent life, these crooked men are doing their politics by making promises that will not be possible in more than 10 to 15 generations.

    sam Monday, 22 April 2024 09:11 AM

Idiotic decision. Plantation workers must be provided housing close to their work places

    Sokrates Monday, 22 April 2024 09:23 AM

What kind of thoughtless, idiotic idea is that? Should the number of beggars in Colombo be increased or should tea estates be built there? People need houses in the highlands close to their workplaces. This proves once again that Ranil has lost touch with reality.

    Gamini Monday, 22 April 2024 09:32 AM

where do we have 50,000 flats to give away in Colombo??

    sunil Monday, 22 April 2024 09:33 AM

what's the point of giving estate workers flats in Colombo when they need better living conditions, houses, hospitals and schools in their estates

    nathan Monday, 22 April 2024 09:36 AM

First give them the Rs.1700 minimum wage they are asking before thinking of giving them flats in Colombo which they have not asked and you do not have for distribution

    Pissu Monday, 22 April 2024 09:53 AM

Need to send thus mad man home before the climate change. Make him the Dean of the Climate University another talk shop

    mnsmart Monday, 22 April 2024 10:44 AM

every household will be given a Volkswagen each to travel to the work place.

Premalal Perera Monday, 22 April 2024 11:06 AM

He is beginning to con the plantation workers nW that he cannot con the rest of the country. Remember the gold chain and gold bracelet?

Periya Iya Monday, 22 April 2024 12:46 PM

I feel sorry for you all. The government in Colombo going to give flats to the plantation workers. It will be in the workers area.

Election gimmicks Monday, 22 April 2024 12:51 PM

They demanded salary increment to Rs 1700 from current Rs 1000, so the politicians promised a flat in Colombo, after the election is over there will be no flat or no increase in salary, that is the drama of the politicians. Only they just need to print some news in the media. That's all takes for the politicians.

CURSES OF THE MASSES WILL REMAIN WITH HIM FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE Monday, 22 April 2024 02:41 PM

YET ANOTHER ELECTION SPIN, BY THIS OLD VINDICTIVE TRATOR. 10 KGS OF RICE, 50 FLATS IN COLOMBO ETC. HAS HE BEEN FEATHERING HIS NEST TOO OR GIVEN A POT OF GOLD BY THE PREVIOUS CROOK OR THEIR STOOGES?

    Cherath Monday, 22 April 2024 03:50 PM

Another outlandish utterance from Wickremesinghe to sway the continuous anger and frustration of the general public. These are nothing but castles floating in the sky with pink pigs. More to the point -Since his entry through the backdoor, name one project to regenerate industry and agriculture and to attract foreign direct investments to strengthen the rupee.

    Buddhist Monday, 22 April 2024 04:27 PM

What a crap! Are the plantation workers supposed to take a helicopter to work in the estate while staying in Colombo?

    FredSnR Monday, 22 April 2024 04:32 PM

And what would a foreign investor think reading stuff like this Not so long ago it was a country that could not feed itself and had to depend on the benevolence of others to revive it

    A story Tuesday, 23 April 2024 05:50 AM

I became suspicious; after all RW is a master debator. Isnt it? Googling for an alternate meaning for "flat", I found "a story in a house". Ah! It's just a story. Nothing to worry. Colombo wont get over growded by this.

navratne willamune Tuesday, 23 April 2024 09:00 AM
