Colombo, January 2 (Daily Mirror) - Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) National Organiser and Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa claimed today that, instead of the opposition undermining the government, it is “pulling its own legs” and attempting to shift blame.
Addressing the media after visiting the Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy, MP Rajapaksa said the public has become disappointed due to what he described as unlimited promises made by the President without realistic planning.
He alleged that the President made assurances to satisfy affected communities without properly assessing the situation or consulting relevant officials.
“As an example, the President initially promised Rs. 5 million in compensation for a person who lost a house. However, with real data now available, that amount has been reduced to around Rs. 500,000,” MP Rajapaksa said.
He stressed that promises should be based on accurate information and discussions with relevant authorities to ensure they can be fulfilled.
MP Rajapaksa further alleged that some presidential statements were made without a proper basis, mainly to reduce public pressure, which led to unrealistic expectations among the people.
“The SLPP is not pulling the government down. The current government is doing that on its own. The opposition’s role is simply to stand with the people, while the government is effectively trying to topple itself,” he added.
