Colombo, January 1 (Daily Mirror) - Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) National Organiser and Member of Parliament Namal Rajapaksa said today that the government is “digging its own pit,” adding that the role of the opposition is to pressure the administration to at least partially fulfil the promises it made to the people.
Addressing the media at an event held in Seenigama, MP Rajapaksa said the SLPP had carried out various promotional and political activities over the past year, noting that the period had been particularly difficult for the public.
He said the people were severely affected following the imposition of what he described as unbearable taxes after the National People’s Power (NPP) government came to power, as well as by a series of natural disasters. According to him, the government failed to act promptly in several areas where lives could have been saved and has also failed to deliver on its key promises to the public.
“Many people were forced to welcome the New Year while staying in safety centres and temporary camps, uncertain about their lives and their homes,” MP Rajapaksa said. He recalled that the President had promised compensation to those affected by disasters.
He stressed that the government must prioritise providing compensation and take immediate steps to resettle displaced families in their homes. “The government does not pay attention to the actions taken by opposition parties, but it must fulfil the promises made to the people,” he said.
“As the SLPP, we will continue to fulfil our responsibilities,” MP Rajapaksa added.
