Colombo, March 14 (Daily Mirror) - Amidst controversy over finalising the auspicious timing designated for performing Sinhala New Year rituals, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Nalinda Jayatissa yesterday assured that the government will take steps to issue the auspicious timing with the consultation of the astrologers.
He told the media after visiting Mahanayake Theras in Kandy that several discussions have been held with relevant parties over the matter.
Responding to a question regarding the absence of the State Committee on Auspicious Times, the Minister said the committee had been dissolved during the previous government and that the Ministry will take a correct decision whether to reappoint the committee.
He said that despite the absence of the committee, it has been the practice to prepare auspicious timings by the Ministry's astrologers. "We have held several rounds of discussions over the matter. I think it will not be an issue. The Ministry's astrologers can prepare the auspicious timing (Neketh Seettuwa)," he said.
The Minister said the annual State Oil Anointing Ceremony will be held at the Sri Natha Devalaya of Kandy, organised by the Health Ministry, Department of Ayurveda, Department of Cultural Affairs and the Ministry of Buddhist Affairs.
The Department of Cultural Affairs said that a discussion is scheduled for Monday (16) under the leadership of the subject minister, Hiniduma Sunil Senevi, to prepare the New Year auspicious timings.
It said in a statement that two groups have offered to prepare auspicious timings for 2026, and that the Ministry has held four rounds of discussions to come to an agreement on the matter; however, no agreement has been reached so far.
The Department said another discussion is scheduled for Monday (16) with the participation of Minister Sunil Senevi.
