Former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa cannot deny what he told me during the telephone conversation he had with me in 2021, Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith said today.

Cardinal was referring to the statement of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa where he denies telling the former that recormendations made by the Presidential Commission cannot be implemented as he will have to take action against people and associations which were close to him.

"Both I and my secretary can confirm and prove that the fomer President talked to me over the phone on Febuary 2 2021. Rajapaksa has said recently that the Presidential Commission which probed the Easter Sunday bomb attacks has only recormended banning Islamic extrmist organizations. However, the report has clearly recommended banning a non-Islamic organization as well. The former President cannot deny these facts," the Cardinal said in a statement.

He accused former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa of transferring intelligence officers who were probing the Easter Sunday attacks. Also, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith has accused the present government for failing to implement recormendations made by the Presidential Commission. The Cardinal questioned as to why action has not been taken against former President Maithripala Sirisena though the Commission has recormended action against him.

"The present government also continues to push everything which is connected to the Easter Sunday bomb attacks under the carpet," he added.

Drama as usual. May the peace of Jesus Christ that passes all understanding be with you.

We all know who masterminded this saga and taking to them directly wouldn’t help at all. Why no investigation on the Channe4 revelations? Did we conducted any investigations without any political interference… it’s time for international investigation but your comments previously on this was not very helpful.

we are tired of hearing about these attacks on Gota. If he was so powerful, how come he just easily left his President position? People are just blindly hating this guy. Its absurd. Let it rest. Its clear there was lapse in intelligence and a lot of people including ISIS, past president (my3) and pm are responsible but no one wants to accept. Gota had nothing to do with it. Move on. Lets not waste energy on Gota anymore.

Engage International from Renowned Agencies Saturday, 04 May 2024 10:02 PM

Change this regime in the next elections. Engage internationally investigators from a few renowned agencies to probe all major murder and corruption cases not resolved satisfactorily over the years. If not, this saga will continue for years if the local authorities are assigned these investigations as majority don’t trust them due to their affiliations with politicians. All need to know the truth and have closure. Hope a responsible party taking over from these current greedy and self entitled so called politicians will bring positive changes.

Totally agree, for this country to move forward and for the citizens to be treated fairly, the only solution is the NPP

Cardinal Sin Saturday, 04 May 2024 11:26 PM

Who is this guy? Why does he need cheap publicity? Religion should be kept away from the state affairs. There's no evidence or proof for the existence of any god.

Hey numbnut, When 198 innocent followers of the faith you serve as the leader are murderd by the president and his brother who needs to speak up ? Your grandmother?

Hubert Silvapulle Sunday, 05 May 2024 10:52 AM

He is the leader of the Catholic Community. I think you are aware of it. He has to speak on behalf of his people. If any harm is done to your family will you not speak about it????

    Ranjan G Monday, 06 May 2024 04:01 PM

Sorry, I don't agree with you. Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith represents the Catholics in our country. When a disaster like this happens and hundreds of Catholics perished , it is his responsibility to get the truth as nothing has been transparent up until now. The present government will definitely not take any action against the masterminds who are behind this. If we have a fair presidential election, I believe the NPP will have a good chance to win. I also feel that they are the only ones who will have a genuine investigation. I'm a Buddhist and not a supporter of any political party as well

If you have allegations, prove them in court without doing this drama and teasing.

The present, last and the past governments are all friends. They will not betray each other. The only losers are the people.

Very often it is observed that Gota is referred as former president. It should be always as OUSTED President, not former president

    Mahila Sunday, 05 May 2024 01:03 PM

KD, “GOTA HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. Move on. Let’s not waste energy on Gota anymore”!? Sorry can’t accept that excuse, as President, He should be, first and foremost – accountable!!?? To move-on, we need apology from former President Gota for initiating inquiry based on Commission Report, within his 2½ Years of Rule!!?? Sole BENEFICIARY of whole episode, NONE other!? He is the Mastermind and sole Beneficiary and HE HAS LOT TO ANSWER!! In fact, it's ALL his making!? Deception or “FALL GUYS, ”is the Muslims!? Slip between, "CUP

    Mk Sunday, 05 May 2024 01:14 PM

According to the constitution, the only way you can oust a president is by impeachment in parliament. He was never impeached. He stepped down due to the protests. Either way, ousted or stepped down, he is still a former president. The word former means 'previous'.

Nimal Nanayakkara Sunday, 05 May 2024 03:20 PM
