Colombo, Oct. 30 (Daily Mirror) - The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has decided to launch an island-wide strike starting from 8.00 a.m. tomorrow (31) in protest against ongoing issues in the health sector.
GMOA Media Spokesperson Dr. Chamil Wijesinghe said that doctors attached to all government hospitals across the country will take part in the trade union action, which is expected to disrupt daily medical services nationwide.
He noted, however, that the association would be willing to reconsider the strike if the health authorities provide a reasonable solution to their demands.
“These actions are being taken amidst a series of serious problems in the health system,” Dr. Wijesinghe said. “There is a shortage of doctors, numerous staff-related issues, and a worsening lack of medicines and medical equipment. The facilities available to patients are also deteriorating.”
He further accused the Ministry of Health of continuing to suppress doctors instead of addressing the pressing challenges faced by the public healthcare system.
The GMOA has not specified the duration of the strike, but the move is expected to cause significant disruptions to outpatient clinics and non-emergency hospital services across the country.
