GMOA lambasts Govt.’s move to allow armed Forces to vaccinate people

The decision taken by the Government to allow the three armed Forces personnel to carry out the vaccination drive at their hospitals has created a lot of confusion, the Government Medical Officers Association claimed.

GMOA Secretary Dr. Senal Fernando said the GMOA in collaboration with the Health Ministry had successfully launched the vaccination drive last week at hospitals.

“However, the Epidemiology Unit handed over the vaccination programme to armed Forces personnel to be carried out at their hospitals without giving the critical responsibility to the Health Ministry hospital network. This has created great confusion," he pointed out.

Dr. Fernando said they had received a number complaints with regards to hiccups that have been created in this system. Also, hundreds of people were seen queuing up at these vaccination centres. With this, it is the reputation of the Health sector that is being damaged.

“This is an emergency situation related to the Health sector and not a war with any terrorist organization. Moreover, it should noted that there is no issue in obtaining support from military personnel in this emergency situation. However, authorities must fathom the fact that the Health sector officials must be given the priority in handling this situation” Dr. Fernando stressed.

“We, as the GMOA are of the opinion that the system where vaccination drive is being handled by the military personnel should be rectified soon,” he added. (Sheain Fernandopulle)
