Four arrested over Fisheries Corporation corruption case



Colombo, Nov. 4 (Daily Mirror) - Four individuals, including a former Chairman of the Lanka Fisheries Corporation, have been arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) over an irregular equipment purchase made in 2020.

The arrests relate to the procurement of a high-capacity vacuum packaging machine capable of sealing 2,000 kilograms of fish per hour, which was allegedly purchased without following proper procedures and when it was not necessary. The transaction is reported to have caused a financial loss of Rs. 5,856,116 to the government.

Those arrested are Lalith Daulagala, former Chairman; Chandana Krishantha, Managing Director; Vijith Pushpakumara, Supply Manager; and Anura Chandrasena Bandara, Operations Manager (Workforce Finance Manager).

According to CIABOC, Vijith Pushpakumara is also accused of demanding and accepting a Rs. 100,000 bribe, credited to his personal bank account, in exchange for releasing part of a payment due to the supplier company.

The suspects were produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court, where Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama ordered their release on two surety bails of Rs. 1.5 million each and directed them to surrender their passports.
