Colombo, March 12 (Daily Mirror) - Former SriLankan Airlines Chief Executive Officer Kapila Chandrasena has been arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) over the alleged acceptance of a USD 2 million bribe linked to the Airbus aircraft procurement deal.
Chandrasena arrived at the Bribery Commission this morning to provide a statement, and after recording a lengthy statement with investigators, he was taken into custody.

He was MR's blue eyed boy. He was the CEO of SL Airlines. Prior to this role, he served as the CEO of Mihin Lanka and Mobitel. He also served as the chief marketing officer of Sri Lanka Telecom. All courtesy MR. In Feb 2020, a warrant was issued by the Sri Lankan Law Enforcement Authority for the arrest of him and his wife, about this deal. He was subsequently released on bail. The allegations have been proved in an Approved Judgement delivered on 31st Jan 2020 by the Crown Court of Southwark, in the case between Director of the Serious Fraud Office Vs Airbus SE. The bribe of $2m has been listed as Count 2: Sri Lanka.

Despite some shortcomings from this government, like not appointing competent people to important some positions, like incompetent Vijitha Herath etc, credit should go to this government for apprehending these thieves who contributed to the downfall of SL. If anything, this should pose as lessons to other politicians and public servants that corruption is not tolerated, just like in developed countries. They are called developed countries for a reason. An independent judiciary in this process is extremely important and I must say a number of decisions from the SL judiciary in recent years have been excellent. Sri Lankans have a choice: try to be a developed and prosperous country with rule of law or stay as a perennial developing country forever.
