First turtle nesting of the year recorded at Galle Face

Colombo, February 19 (Daily Mirror) - The first turtle egg-laying of the year was recorded at Galle Face Green on Tuesday night (17), marking the start of the nesting season along the western coastline.

The Wildlife Department reported that an Olive Ridley turtle came ashore to lay its eggs, attracting the attention of wildlife authorities.

Officials from the Bellanwila Attidiya Wildlife Office promptly carried out in-situ conservation measures at the site to ensure the nest was protected.

Wildlife authorities emphasized that such conservation efforts are crucial for safeguarding turtle populations, especially in urban coastal areas where nesting sites are vulnerable to human disturbance.
