Colombo, March 10 (Daily Mirror) - The Energy Minister has agreed to several proposals submitted by electricity trade unions during a discussion held today (10) with the boards of four newly established power sector companies following the restructuring of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB).
The meeting was held with the boards of Electricity Generation Lanka (EGL), Electricity Distribution Lanka (EDL), National System Operator (NSO) and National Transmission Network Service Provider (NTNSP) to discuss clauses in the proposed collective agreement submitted by 25 trade unions on March 8.
According to the decisions reached, the allowances of Rs. 1,000 and Rs. 10,000 under Section 6.1 will continue, while the cost-of-living allowance under Section 6.6 will also be added and paid together as the government-approved cost-of-living allowance.
The annual bonus requested under Section 7.1 will continue to be paid by the companies until a performance-based payment system is introduced by the new entities.
The Minister also agreed to instruct the Ceylon Electricity Board Employees’ Fund to positively consider the retirement benefits requested under Clause 10.8.
During the discussion, the Minister urged the unions to immediately suspend the ongoing trade union action that has caused inconvenience to the public, particularly as electricity supply has been declared an essential service.
He further agreed to arrange a discussion with the President within the next two days to reach a final decision on the salary increase requested under Clause 12.1.
Officials said all other matters agreed upon during the meeting would be amended accordingly and the collective agreement signed.
