Colombo, Sept. 5 (Daily Mirror) - The Government has decided to grant compensation of Rs. 1 million each to the families of those who lost their lives in the fatal bus accident that occurred last night (04) on the Ella–Wellawaya main road.

According to the President’s Media Division (PMD), the financial assistance will be provided through the President’s Fund as immediate relief to the bereaved families.

I have nothing against compensation and I think it's a good thing but the government should not be selective. How do they decide which tragedy deserves government compensation? So many children drown, poor people die and families are left with nothing. In this tragedy there is an ongoing investigation and could end up with criminal charges. This kind of government compensation could make people think it is to cover up an NPP politician's involvement in causing this accident. Just saying.

It is good to help them and I appreciate this and all pensioners from this council must be paid their pension on time to make their family life to go without any difficulty after this suffering : it is our moral duty to look after them all. Our condolences for the families affected in this tragedy: May their soul rest in peace : NPP acted wisely on this matter by paying compensation and they all are government servants and we must appreciate their service as well : It is good example to pay them this money in difficult time

It is completely unjustified to use taxpayers' money for this. The president should have ordered the owner of the bus to pay the compensation ‘voluntarily’.

Why are we paying compensation when we still do not know whether the driver was drunk, bus was in proper running condition and further this compensation needs to be paid by the Insurance of the bus or by owner. Public money is not there for every condition that people fall into trouble.

What about the insurance if the bus owner. I never heard such compensation are paid in ant past instances. I think the private as well as SLTB doesn't have insurance. In this case both sector are not road worthy. I am fine with bus fare increase but they should follow basic rules.
