Dudley Sirisena asks for Rs. 140 support price for paddy kilo from farmers

Leading rice mill owner Dudley Sirisena who has a greater control over the market urged the government to increase the support price of paddy for farmers from Rs. 100 to Rs. 140 a kilo.

Making remarks to the press, he said it would lead to the rise in the price of milled rice to Rs. 280 a kilo for consumers, but farmers could not help it.

Earlier, the President assured that the government would purchase paddy at Rs. 100 per kilo.(Yohan Perera)

Government paying any more for the sub-standard rice, which mill owners would never pay 100 rupees will only encourage further growing of low quality paddy. End the government encouraging no good, poor cultivation. Prices will always be too high if the rice mafia cause government to waste public money paying over-high prices.

A lot of these mill owners, also grow rice. It is in their interests to fatten their margins, and easiest way is to cause greater losses to government by having government buy at higher prices. The opposition parties, other than the SLFP, should seize on this baltant mafia tactic to drive up prices to consumers.

when paddy was purchased at 40 a kg of samba was sold at Rrs.100.Now the same samba is sold under the supiri name for Rs.260 against Rs.100 purchase at Rs.160 margin using the same machinery. Is any one stopping S from paying Rs.140?

There is paddy from two years in some wherehouses, all because low quality paddy is over flowing in the market. In the past it was used for animal feed only. Already mill owners had refused to buy law grade paddy even at 50 rupees. Some poorer consumers can barely afford to buy rice at 100 rupees a kilo, but government willing to waste 100 rupee for raw paddy. Getting high quality rice from overseas and distributing is better for government than their buying the junk grade paddy, milling it at exorbitant prices and giving away the rice that is only really good for animal feed.
