Colombo, March 28 (Daily Mirror) - Claiming that the El Niño phenomenon and positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) phenomenon are likely after June, Additional Director General of the Department of Meteorology Ajith Wijemanne yesterday warned that Sri Lanka could face a drought situation in July and August if El Niño and IOD phenomenon got activated.
He said the El Niño phenomenon is neutral at present and that El Niño phenomenon is likely in Sri Lanka after June.
"There is a 10 to 20 per cent possibility of El Niño phenomenon after June. The current heat index will prevail throughout April and the first two to three weeks of May.
Some rain is expected in May as the Southwest Monsoon is expected to be activated between May 20 and 25. The heat index will reduce after the last week of May," he said.
Wijemanne said in case of a worst-case scenario, Sri Lanka could face a drought situation in July and August. "We receive less rain in July and August normally. But, with likely activation of the El Niño and IOD phenomenon, drought could occur in July and August this year," he said.
