Doctors to limit key services islandwide from tomorrow

Colombo, Nov. 16 (Daily Mirror) - Doctors in all hospitals across the country will limit several key services from tomorrow (Monday, 17), including issuing prescriptions for medicines to be purchased from external pharmacies and recommending laboratory tests to be done at private facilities.

According to the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA), the trade union action comes in protest against the government’s failure to address critical issues in the health sector and concerns raised by doctors over next year’s budget proposals.

The GMOA said health authorities were informed of these issues but failed to provide satisfactory solutions.

GMOA Secretary Dr. Prabath Sugathadasa said the union action will commence at 8 a.m. tomorrow and will be implemented across all hospitals islandwide.

On one hand this is a ggod decision for poor people. Some doctors, force to innocent patients to spend thousands for unwanted reports! The amouts for each usually much more than their weekly wages!

The most disgraceful trade union is Sri Lanka. They stoop to lower levels that an unskilled trade union. It the like, the can migrate and become nurses, attendants, receptionist etc and overseas hospitals making more money than they make now.

CAN THE PRESIDENT/GOVT BRING ALL DOCTORS WORKING IN ALL PUBLICHOSPITALS UNDER ESSENTIAL SERVICES, LIKE GOVTS HAVE DONE IN THE PAST WHEN UNIONS MAKE SUCH DECISIONS WHICH IS DIRECTLY HURTING THE POOR SICK AND SUFFERING WHO CANNOT AFFORD TO GO TO A PRIVATE HOSPITAL AND OR SEE THEIR OWN DOCTOR?. GOVT DOCTORS SHOULD BE BANNED FROM DOING PRIVATE PRACTICE DURING THEIR STANDARD WORKING HOURS, BET SOME OF THEM CALL IN SICK AND DO A FEW HOURS PRIVATE PRACTICE WHEN THEY ARE NOT OF PROTESTS AND OR STRIKES.

The government dectors who prescribed the eye drops which ended inpatient going blind and the ones who prescribed water instead of a life saving drugs need to be arrested and prosecuted. It is the doctors responsibility to check the integrity of the drugs they prescribed.

What are the critical issues. They studied in Govt. Universities under free education, on tax payer's money.I n addition they were paid monthly allowance till they finish their studies.Now also they are better off with salary increase,allowances etc.etc.

This is one of the sole reasons the SLMC and the government must allow non dual citizenship doctors to come back and set up their own practice .It could be charity or otherwise allow them to be re registered.
