Doctors flag rising health threat to children amid rainy season

Colombo, June 16 (Daily Mirror) - Health experts have warned parents to stay on high alert as a sharp rise in infectious diseases among children is being reported across the country amid the prevailing rainy weather.

Consultant Paediatrician Dr Maheshaka Wijayawardena told Daily Mirror conditions such as dengue, respiratory infections, chikungunya, meningitis and diarrhoeal diseases are currently on the rise among children.

He noted that while some illnesses are mild, others can become life-threatening if warning signs are ignored.

“Several diseases are currently spreading among children during the rainy season. While conditions like dengue and meningitis can become life-threatening, others, such as chikungunya, respiratory infections and diarrhoeal illnesses, still require careful monitoring. Parents should remain vigilant and seek early medical attention when warning signs develop,” he said.

Respiratory infections are among the most common at present, with symptoms such as sore throat, cough, ear infections and breathing difficulty. Parents are advised to seek urgent care if children develop fast or difficult breathing and to keep sick children away from school to prevent further spread.

Dengue cases have also increased, with health authorities warning that children may deteriorate quickly after the fever subsides. Warning signs include unusual sleepiness, cold hands and feet, and weakness, requiring immediate hospital admission.

Dr Wijayawardena also cautioned that chikungunya is circulating, causing fever, body pain and rashes, while meningitis remains a serious concern with symptoms such as severe headache, vomiting, neck stiffness and seizures.

Meanwhile, diarrhoeal diseases are increasing following heavy rains and flooding, with health experts urging parents to ensure children stay hydrated and maintain proper hygiene.

As such, he stressed that vaccination, mosquito control, good hygiene practices and early medical attention remain the most effective ways to protect children during the rainy season.
