Discussions with electricity trade unions progress successfully



Colombo, March 31 (Daily Mirror) - A key discussion between trade union representatives of the Ceylon Electricity Board and chairpersons of newly established state-owned electricity companies was held yesterday (30) at the Labour Ministry, under the patronage of Labour Deputy Minister Mahinda Jayasinghe.

The meeting follows recent intervention by the Minister to resolve the electricity workers’ strike, with steps taken to reach a consensus among all parties in line with the Industrial Disputes Act.

During the discussion, trade union representatives presented their concerns, views, and proposals. Key issues including appointment letters, hierarchical structures, and matters related to the employee handbook were taken up for detailed deliberation.

Officials said that constructive positions and possible solutions were reached on several matters through dialogue.

Addressing the gathering, Deputy Minister Mahinda Jayasinghe highlighted that cooperation between employers and employees is essential to resolving disputes efficiently. He assured his fullest support in facilitating solutions in his capacity as Deputy Minister of Labour.

He further underscored the importance of overcoming challenges collectively through dialogue, in the interest of the country and its people.

All parties agreed to convene another round of discussions on or before the 10th.

The meeting was attended by Secretary to the Ministry of Labour S.M. Piyatissa, Commissioner General of Labour Nadeeka Wataliyadda, along with other officials, chairpersons of electricity state-owned companies, and several trade union representatives.
