Colombo, January. 10 (Daily Mirror) - The depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal is likely to cross the Mullaittivu coast around this evening, the Department of Meteorology said.
According to the Department, the system is expected to weaken into a low-pressure area by tomorrow, after which its influence on the island’s weather is likely to gradually decrease.
As of 11.30 a.m. today, the depression was located about 20 kilometres east of Mullaittivu.
Showers are expected in the Northern, North-Central, Uva and Eastern Provinces, while showers may also occur in the North-Western and Central Provinces. In addition, showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in other areas during the evening or night.
Fairly strong winds of up to 40 kmph can be expected at times in the Northern and North-Western Provinces, as well as in the Matale, Trincomalee and Nuwara Eliya districts.
The Department of Meteorology has requested the general public to take adequate precautions to minimise possible damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning associated with thundershowers.
