Colombo, Jan. 29 (Daily Mirror) - Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) National Organiser and MP Namal Rajapaksa today dismissed attempts to summon him before court, claiming they are part of a cover-up of government scandals, including the coal and container scams.
Speaking to the media on his arrival at the Colombo Magistrate’s Court, Rajapaksa criticised the handling of court summons and questioned the ability of law enforcement authorities to manage organised crimes.
“A motion was already filed before the Hambantota Court a week before the letter asking me to appear before the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). The police were informed that I could not attend that day. Yet, now a letter asking me to appear in Colombo at 9:30 a.m. has been sent from Tangalle at 9:50 a.m. The IGP does not even know the distance involved,” he said.
Rajapaksa also highlighted what he described as the government’s mismanagement of funds intended for cyclone victims.
“Checks issued by the President have bounced. As an ordinary businessman or journalist, what happens when your check is dishonored? These checks for the victims have been returned. This government is bankrupt,” he said.
While criticising the administration, he added that he does not question the current President’s lifestyle or security.
“We saw the President jogging with police protection. That is acceptable. But if a President’s official decisions are not protected, then the system collapses. Governing a country cannot happen in isolation,” he said, warning that leaders cannot run the country from within Pelawatte and expect to maintain control.
Rajapaksa’s statements come amid ongoing legal and political scrutiny over high-profile corruption allegations within the government, which he claims are being used to target him politically.
