Court frees army commando officers arrested while carrying sniper type firearm

Colombo, Jan. 12 (Daily Mirror) - Two suspects arrested while in possession of a sniper type firearm in front of the Criminal Investigation Department are officers attached to the Sri Lanka Army Commando Regiment, counsel appearing on behalf of the Sri Lanka Army informed the Fort Acting Magistrate Lahiru Silva today.

The Criminal Investigation Department informed court that the two officers were arrested yesterday while they were walking along the road in front of the former Police Headquarters, dressed in civilian clothing and carrying the sniper firearm concealed in a black cloth.

Subsequently, counsel appearing for the Sri Lanka Army submitted to court that the two officers had been returning after attending a training programme when they were arrested in this manner.

Following these submissions, the Fort Acting Magistrate ordered the CID to hand over the two suspect officers to the Commander of the relevant Army unit.

Police further informed court that at the time of arrest, the suspects did not have any documents in their possession to confirm their identity.

Appearing on behalf of the Sri Lanka Army, counsel informed court that the two suspects had been returning after attending a special training programme when they were arrested. The counsel further submitted that both suspects were lawfully authorised to possess firearms.

After considering the submissions made, the Magistrate ordered that the two officers be released.
