Colombo, Nov.27 (Daily Mirror) - A countrywide protest campaign is scheduled to be launched today (27) at lunchtime, forcing the government to grant a minimum Rs. 20,000 salary hike or allowance to government employees, the State and Provincial Public Service Unions Association said.

The union also objects to the proposal in the budget to take 8% of the government employee's salary for Widows' and Orphans' pensions.

I assure there will be no water cannons or tear gas as the government will not want this to escalate for the government to be crippled

Mostly Private sector and all other forms of taxes pay for the government sector employees and in return one gets always a service below even -1 standards. Free education, concessions in loans etc... pls don't strike and hassle the public already we are trampled below the surface with high cost of living. U want to fight for your right pls do that inside your office.

How sick is this Ranil government!!! Pay government employees working in secure, well-paid jobs an additional "bonus" to cover the cost of living and millions of families with children live below the subsistence level!!! Children go to preschools and schools hungry, families go without meals that would be necessary!!! Many families don't have enough money to pay for their children's schooling!!! What schizophrenia! Seniors receive an increase in their pensions that is not worth mentioning and social assistance for the poor remains at the lowest level!!! Anyone who doesn't recognize this as a clumsy election trick with manipulative intentions can no longer be helped!!! It remains to be hoped that Sri Lankans will all recognize this as an electoral maneuver and give this socially unjust government what it deserves, the vote out of office!!! The new beginning after the election can only get better!!!

Volker has given a very good point. Voters should understand that the promises given are to get the votes. How they are going to find funds is not clear From the last budget, around 80 percent had not been achieved. This time it looks like 90 percent will not be achieved completely. The borrowings mention is in trillions. The poor citizens and even the unborn for generations will have to pay.

How can a already loss making government sector do this. Thia foolish government should have started laying off program sometime back and now they are demanding more. Two third of the government work force should be layed off. Otherwise no future for SL.

Government workers are behaving like small children demanding goodies that their father can't afford to get, hahaha. All I can say is that don't cross the limit.

    Tilak Monday, 27 November 2023 12:07 PM

Sack all the excess government servants and give Rs 20,000 to the remaining staff.

    Sam Monday, 27 November 2023 12:13 PM

We were expecting the public sector workforce to be significantly reduced down to reasonable levels to save cost. Not keep the same staffing and increase the salaries!! More election rubbish. No hope for this country. Same with the armed forces, still 350,000 strong, what for!!! and you keep increasing their salaries. Its 4x bigger than they have in the UK. Get a backbone Ranil and do what is right for the country.

Trade Unions are also responsible for this crisis no matter what happedned in the past they had a good time most of the loss making government entities have been managed by innocent peoples tax money.People are struggling on their day to day life.. I think enough is enough...

We shall remain a ‘Third world country’ thank you public service for all your efforts in maintaining our ‘third world’ status!

    Noris Monday, 27 November 2023 01:59 PM

We should NOT support these protests. Our govt is giving too much free things like Education, Medical etc

    Priyan66 Monday, 27 November 2023 05:55 PM

Private sector workers work hard and pay taxes to maintain these inefficient government servants. Poor people of the country pay several taxes daily, I ask from government servants don't you shame to feed your families from other peoples hard earned money ?
