Colombo–Kandy main road to remain closed until further notice

Colombo,Nov. 26 (Daily Mirror) - The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) announced today that the Colombo–Kandy main road will remain closed until further notice, following continued heavy rainfall and further risk of rock and earth mound collapses in the Pahala Kadugannawa area.

The Pahala Kadugannawa section was initially scheduled to reopen this evening. However, due to unstable conditions caused by persistent rain, the NBRO decided to keep the road closed.

The organisation has already informed the District Secretary regarding the decision.

Motorists are urged to use alternate routes when travelling to Colombo or Kandy.

The road was first closed after a major rockfall and earth movement struck a shop and a house in the Ganethenna area earlier this week.

Police said the risk remains high, and the affected section cannot be reopened at this time.

Authorities have recommended the following alternate routes for travel to Kandy:

Colombo–Kurunegala–Kandy

Colombo–Karandupana–Kandy

Colombo–Mawanella–Hemmathagama–Gampola–Kandy

Colombo–Mawanella–Ganewatta Junction–Kovil Kanda–Pilimathalawa–Kandy

Motorists are advised to exercise caution and follow official updates as weather conditions continue to affect road safety in the area.
