Colombo, Jan. 13 (Daily Mirror) - A large-scale donation of school uniform fabrics by China is set to ease the financial burden on millions of Sri Lankan families as the new school year begins, with more than 4.4 million students expected to benefit from the programme.
The donation, made by the Government of the People’s Republic of China, includes 11.484 million metres of fabric that will be used to provide free school uniforms to children studying in government and government-assisted schools, as well as to students of government-approved pirivenas. The fabric is being delivered in five shipments, with three already having arrived at the Colombo Port.
The official handover of the latest consignment took place yesterday (13) in the presence of Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Dr. Harini Amarasooriya and Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Qi Zhenhong.
Addressing the event, Prime Minister Amarasooriya said the donation would help ensure that no child is kept away from school due to the inability to afford a uniform, especially at a time when many families are still facing economic difficulties.
She said the long-term support provided by China for Sri Lanka’s school uniform programme shows a strong commitment to the welfare of Sri Lankan children and to the country’s education system.
According to the Ministry of Education, arrangements have been made to distribute the fabrics to Divisional Education Offices from January 19, 2026, so that uniforms can be provided to students without delay.
Chinese Ambassador Qi Zhenhong said China will continue to support Sri Lanka’s education sector, adding that helping children receive proper schooling is a key part of strengthening future generations.
Deputy Minister of Education and Higher Education Dr. Madura Seneviratne, Secretary to the Ministry of Education Nalaka Kaluwewa and other senior officials were also present at the event.
