Cable car projects proposed at Sri Pada and key tourist sites

Colombo, April 28 (Daily Mirror) - Attention has been drawn to proposals for introducing cable car systems at several key tourist destinations, including Sri Pada (Adam’s Peak), as part of efforts to enhance the country’s tourism infrastructure.

The matter was discussed at a Tourism Task Force meeting held today (28) at the Presidential Secretariat under the patronage of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Minister Vijitha Herath.

According to the President’s Media Division (PMD), long-standing requests from various stakeholders to establish a cable car project near Sri Pada were reviewed during the meeting. In addition, Kikiliyamana and Ella have also been identified as potential locations suitable for similar developments.

Officials focused on the need to conduct feasibility studies for the proposed sites, secure preliminary approvals, and examine technical and environmental reports required for project implementation.

In a separate development-oriented discussion, attention was also drawn to broader tourism facilitation measures, including the planned introduction of a visa-free facility for citizens of 40 countries from May 25. Authorities expect the move to significantly boost tourist arrivals.

The meeting also reviewed progress on improving sanitation facilities across 19 national parks, including Yala. The PMD said a programme has already been initiated, with maintenance of existing toilet facilities outsourced to a private entity. Plans for installing new sanitation systems were also discussed.

Meanwhile, officials explored the concept of establishing a dedicated tourism zone along the coastal stretch from Colpetty. The proposed development aims to strengthen visitor safety and improve attractions in the area, with expectations of drawing around 2,000 to 3,000 tourists.
