Colombo, Feb. 3 (Daily Mirror) - In line with the National Policy on Renewable Energy, the Cabinet has approved the Renewable Energy Resources Development Plan 2025–2030, aimed at meeting 70 per cent of Sri Lanka’s national electricity demand from renewable energy sources by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
The preparation of the plan is also mandated under the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority Act No. 35 of 2007, which requires a structured framework for the development and utilisation of renewable energy resources in the country.
The plan was prepared by the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority (SLSEA) in consultation with all relevant stakeholders and focuses on three key areas. These include the identification and prioritisation of suitable lands for renewable energy projects, the development of a comprehensive renewable energy map and a timeline for renewable energy park development, as well as the inclusion of floating solar power projects.
The plan was submitted to the Cabinet by the Energy Minister, and approval was granted, paving the way for the accelerated and coordinated development of renewable energy infrastructure in line with national climate and energy targets.
