CID names political figures in alleged campaign to undermine Easter attacks probe

Colombo, June 16 (Daily Mirror) - The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has filed a report with the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court detailing an organized effort by several individuals to obstruct justice and commit contempt of court regarding the ongoing Easter Sunday bomb attacks investigations, police said.

The move comes after the suspect, former intelligence chief Suresh Sallay, who is currently being held under detention orders, was admitted to the National Hospital Colombo due to his deteriorating health.

According to the Police, authorities have observed an organised group intentionally broadcasting false statements through electronic and social media networks. The CID reported that these actions are aimed at creating public resentment, suspicion, disrespect and hostility toward the judiciary, thereby severely undermining the integrity of the judicial process.

Police said the CID has identified several key figures involved in this alleged coordinated disinformation campaign. The named individuals include former Members of Parliament Wimal Weerawansa and Udaya Gammanpila, MP Dilith Jayaweera, former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s private secretary Sugishwara Bandara, Leader of the Sri Lanka Mahajana Party Asanka Navaratne, and Senior Lecturer Mahinda Pathirana.

The Police confirmed that the CID submitted these facts to the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court yesterday, requesting legal interventions against the individuals for acting in contempt of the court and intentionally disrupting the high-profile investigations.
