Colombo, Feb. 3 (Daily Mirror) - The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has successfully recovered more than Rs. 90 million from individuals and businesses who obtained electricity illegally during 2025, officials said.
The CEB’s Special Investigation Unit (SIU) conducted island-wide raids last year, uncovering 1,259 cases of meter tampering and 72 cases of illegal electricity connections, commonly known as “hooks.” These fraudulent activities caused substantial financial losses to the state-owned utility.
According to Indika Fernando, Manager of the SIU, a total of Rs. 92,770,061.21 was recovered during the operations, of which Rs. 90,242,561.21 was compensation for damages to the CEB and Rs. 2,527,500 represented court fees.
“The suspects, ranging from businessmen to professionals, were arrested during raids across the island. They had been altering meters or connecting directly to the main supply to evade proper billing,” Fernando said.
He added that the SIU remains vigilant and urges the public to report any suspected electricity fraud through the hotline 1987 or by calling 011-2422259.
“The CEB is committed to taking legal action against all cases of electricity fraud to protect public resources,” Fernando emphasized.
