Colombo, Nov. 15 (Daily Mirror) - The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has imposed fresh maximum retail prices on several canned fish varieties in an effort to curb price volatility and strengthen regulatory oversight across the food sector.
The new price controls, detailed in the Extraordinary Gazette issued on November 14, 2025, come at a time when consumers have been grappling with inconsistent market prices for essential goods. Canned fish—widely used across Sri Lankan households—has been among the items most affected by fluctuating retail rates.
The order sets strict ceilings on both 155g and 425g cans of tuna, mackerel, and jack mackerel. The new structure places jack mackerel at the top of the price range, with a 425g can capped at Rs. 560, while tuna remains the most affordable at Rs. 165 for a 155g can.
By rescinding a previous order issued in December 2024, the CAA appears to be recalibrating its strategy to better align with current market trends and production costs. Officials say the updated pricing is intended to protect consumers from unfair markups while also providing clarity to traders.
CAA Chairman Hemantha Samarakoon, who signed the directive, said that the new prices—effective from November 15—must be adhered to strictly by manufacturers, distributors, and retailers to maintain market discipline.
