Colombo, July 17 (Daily Mirror) - The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has introduced a new regulation requiring all processed liquid milk sold in Sri Lanka to comply with the maximum permissible aflatoxin limit from January 8, 2027.
The directive, issued under Section 12(2) of the Consumer Affairs Authority Act, No. 9 of 2003 (as amended), was published in an Extraordinary Gazette.
Under the new rules, producers, manufacturers, importers, packers, suppliers, store owners, distributors, transporters and traders will be prohibited from producing, importing, selling or distributing processed liquid milk that exceeds the permitted aflatoxin level.
According to the Gazette, the aflatoxin content in processed liquid milk must not exceed 0.5 micrograms per kilogram (0.5 µg/kg or ppb), as specified under Sri Lanka Standard (SLS) 1815 issued by the Sri Lanka Standards Institution.
The CAA said the regulation will come into force on January 8, 2027, making compliance with the prescribed standard mandatory throughout the processed liquid milk supply chain.
The direction was issued by order of the Consumer Affairs Authority and signed by S. M. D. Suriyakumara.
