Colombo, Jan. 28 (Daily Mirror) - The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has apprehended a businessman selling counterfeit electric fans by exploiting consumer trust in Japanese brand names. The raid, carried out in the Piliyandala area, revealed that the fans lacked any verifiable information regarding a legitimate importer or manufacturer.

The case, filed yesterday (27) at the Kesbewa Magistrate Court, saw the businessman admit his guilt. The court ordered the seizure of all 20 fans presented as evidence and imposed a fine of Rs. 40,000.

The CAA urged consumers to exercise caution to avoid such scams. Recommended checks include:

Inspect the label and print quality of the letters.

Verify the manufacturer’s or importer’s name and address.
Confirm the Maximum Retail Price (MRP).
Request a company warranty card.
Always obtain a valid receipt after payment.

The CAA continues to conduct raids across the country to protect consumers from misleading practices.

This is a very important action by the CAA. I have personally seen similar practices in Colombo. A well‑known office automation company brings products from China, removes the “Made in China” label, and replaces it with “Made in Japan” to mislead customers. These kinds of unethical practices damage consumer trust and put genuine businesses at a disadvantage. Strict monitoring and stronger penalties are needed to stop this type of fraud.

Almost all Chinese products are counterfeit or illegally copied products from Western or Japanese companies. The CAA should take vigorous action against this, as these products are usually of the poorest quality and therefore constitute fraud against the buyer.
