CAA busts businessman selling fake “Japanese brand” electric fans in Piliyandala

Colombo, Jan. 28 (Daily Mirror) - The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has apprehended a businessman selling counterfeit electric fans by exploiting consumer trust in Japanese brand names. The raid, carried out in the Piliyandala area, revealed that the fans lacked any verifiable information regarding a legitimate importer or manufacturer.

The case, filed yesterday (27) at the Kesbewa Magistrate Court, saw the businessman admit his guilt. The court ordered the seizure of all 20 fans presented as evidence and imposed a fine of Rs. 40,000.

The CAA urged consumers to exercise caution to avoid such scams. Recommended checks include:

Inspect the label and print quality of the letters.

  • Verify the manufacturer’s or importer’s name and address.
  • Confirm the Maximum Retail Price (MRP).
  • Request a company warranty card.
  • Always obtain a valid receipt after payment.

The CAA continues to conduct raids across the country to protect consumers from misleading practices.
