Bus shortages persist as NTC seeks fare hike approval

Colombo, March 23 (Daily Mirror) - Despite some buses operating today (23), passengers continue to face disruptions in several areas, National Transport Commission (NTC) Director General Dr. Nilan Miranda said. Bus services on expressways remain completely suspended, forcing commuters to rely on ordinary roads.

Dr. Miranda confirmed that all SLTB buses are in operation today, but there is a shortage of private buses, adding to the travel difficulties.

The NTC has prepared a revised bus fare schedule, covering 350 fares from minimum to maximum, and will submit it to the Cabinet this evening. The commission has requested approval for fare increases exceeding 10%, which will be announced once sanctioned.

This move comes amid ongoing transport disruptions, highlighting the strain on public commuting options and the need for fare adjustments to sustain services.
