Budget neglect may drive young doctors abroad: Dr. Chamal Sanjeewa

Colombo, Nov. 9 (Daily Mirror) - The government’s failure to address salary discrepancies and welfare issues of doctors could accelerate the migration of young medical professionals, Specialist Dr. Chamal Sanjeewa, Chairman of the Medical and Civil Rights Doctors’ Trade Union Alliance warns.

He said that despite long-standing disparities in salaries and allowances, no practical steps have been taken to ensure a living wage for doctors. “With the current high tax policy, doctors face severe financial pressure, especially those who do not engage in private practice,” he explained.

Dr. Sanjeewa highlighted that many doctors serving in rural and remote areas lack official housing and must spend their personal income on accommodation and family welfare. He also criticized the government for inviting doctors who left the public service to return while failing to create a conducive environment for them to do so.

“It is incomprehensible that the government maintains such a paternalistic attitude towards professionals while election promises remain unfulfilled,” he said, urging President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to pay direct attention to the issue.
