Colombo, November 10 (Daily Mirror) - The Chairman of the Medical and Civil Rights Doctors’ Trade Union Alliance, Specialist Dr. Chamal Sanjeewa, has strongly criticized the 2026 budget, claiming it allocates significant funds for animal welfare while neglecting the country’s medical professionals.
“In this year’s budget, a large amount of capital has been allocated for the welfare of animals, including dogs, but no provisions have been made to retain or encourage young doctors and specialists,” Dr. Sanjeewa said.
He noted that thousands of health professionals work tirelessly around the clock from rural hospitals to primary care centers maintaining Sri Lanka’s primary health indicators at an international level. “It is regrettable that this time, no special attention was given to their welfare. Even a small relief measure would have been appreciated,” he added.
Dr. Sanjeewa further said that providing incentives such as free vehicle licenses would help retain doctors in the country.
