Colombo, February 4 (Daily Mirror) - Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malclom Ranjith today called for vast political, economic and legal reforms which will bring real freedom for the people of Sri Lanka.

Speaking during a special service to mark the 77th Independence Day, Cardinal Ranjith called for a new Constitution, scrapping of the Online Safety Bill and a new legislation which guides the head of state to serve the people rather than enjoying power and perks.

“The current Constitution should be scrapped as soon as possible and a new legislation which makes the head of state legally bound to serve the nation without enjoying power and perks should be introduced,” he said.

The appointment of authoritarian figures in our nation cannot solely be attributed to constitutional frameworks; rather, it is a reflection of the collective will of the people, shaped significantly by the narratives propagated by politicians and religious authorities. This raises critical questions about the nature of public consciousness: are the minds of the populace truly free and unconditioned, or are they influenced by the prevailing ideologies of those in positions of power? For instance, the reluctance to embrace inclusivity, such as the singing of the national anthem in multiple languages during church events at least, prompts us to consider who or what is responsible for oppressing such expressions of unity. Is it the constitution that imposes these limitations, or is it a deeper societal division that has been entrenched by years of political and religious rhetoric?
