Dambulla, Feb 22 (Daily Mirror) - Sri Lanka's T20 captain lashed out at the umpiring during the third and final T20I against Afghanistan at Palekelle on Wednesday, claiming that a missed no ball call in the final over influenced his team's three-run defeat.

With 11 runs needed in the final three balls for Sri Lanka to win, a full toss from Afghanistan's fast bowler Wafadar Mohammad soared above the waist of all-rounder Kamindu Mendis, as he stepped out of the crease and attempted to heave the ball onto the leg side.

With the no ball not signaled, Kamindu Mendis pleaded with umpires Ravindra Wimalasiri and square leg umpire Lyndon Hannibal to review the call, but the umpires chose not to.

"To be honest, this is not something that can happen in an international cricket match. If it was just above the waist, then it's understandable, but had that gone a little higher, it would have hit the batsman on the head!" a visibly annoyed Hasaranga told journalists after the match.

"If he can't see that, then he's not fit enough to be an international-level umpire. It will be bettter if he did another job."

A wide off the next delivery reduced the equation to 10 runs off two balls, but Mendis managed just six runs to give Afghanistan a three-run win.

"Batsmen used to be able to review waist-high no balls, if I remember correctly, but the ICC have changed that rule. But if the third umpire can call front-foot no-balls, then there is no reason that he can't also call waist-high no balls. The umpire could have also checked with the third umpire if he wasn't sure, but he chose not to do that as well. I dont know what was going through his mind," Hasaranga added.

Hasaranga was seen arguing with umpires after the match, as fast bowler Binura Fernando held the Sri Lankan captain back, with coach Chris Silverwood also seen animatedly speaking to the officials.

this fellow should be removed from the captaincy

    Maqs Thursday, 22 February 2024 12:39 PM

Not at all. He is one of the best in the game today. He is leasing from the front as well. And in this case, it is crystal clear that the umpire was at fault. How many matches have been decided by just one mistake of umpires. So it is not the captain, but the umpire must be taken to task

    Kandy Thursday, 22 February 2024 02:24 PM

Never before we have heard of any player, however much disappointed have criticized umpire or decisions in public. This guy has lost his head

Rip Winkle Thursday, 22 February 2024 02:50 PM

Why? Because he stood up for whats right? You've either never played cricket or you are a disgruntled old umpire.

    Gune Thursday, 22 February 2024 07:26 PM

In which case Arjuna should have also resigned for arguing for Murali. Dont talk rubbish if you don’t understand the game

Stefan Atton Thursday, 22 February 2024 11:33 PM

Recent events involving cricketer Hasaranga highlight the crucial need to respect umpires’ decisions in cricket. National players serve as role models, and displaying sportsmanship sets a positive example for young athletes. Upholding the game’s integrity and the values of fair play and respect is essential. Disputing umpires’ decisions damages both individual and national reputations and sends the wrong message to aspiring players. Let’s prioritize humility and dignity in defeat, reinforcing cricket’s legacy of integrity and sportsmanship for future generations.

    Jayantha Thursday, 22 February 2024 09:09 AM

Hanibal has done this in a previous occasion too. He should be checked for match fixing alone with the baller. Also Hasaranga is correct here and third umpire should have the authority to call waist high na balls too. Hanibal should be axed as an umpire.

    Ruwan Thursday, 22 February 2024 01:05 PM

Isn't Hasaranga being a bit silly here? All what he or the team should have done is to see that those runs were taken much earlier, without waiting till the final over.

    RR Thursday, 22 February 2024 09:11 AM

    HASARANGA SHOULD BE SUSPENDED

INSTEAD OF ASKING THE UMPIRE TO FIND ANOTHER JOB BETTER IF HASARANGS TAKE TO PLAYING MARBLES IN HIS BACKYARD

    sambol Thursday, 22 February 2024 09:21 AM

The strategy of the new cricket committee is nothing short of dump tactics. .. have the more convenient and easy to beat sides travel to SL, win matches and show a good progress card!!! Go and win matches in other counties!!!! The captain like most in the team gets carried away with few tatoos and new found fame... little they realise reputation and class in cricket is something these donkeys cannot buy!!!! Enjoy while this soda bottle fizzes out

Get a court order to track the Bank account of Hannibal in the next six months.

    Appuhamy Thursday, 22 February 2024 09:27 AM

Definitely a wrong decision. Nevertheless Hasaranga should speak like a professional. It is the gentleman’s game man.

    Ranga Thursday, 22 February 2024 09:59 AM

lol what world are you living in

Hasaranga bring disrepute to the game Thursday, 22 February 2024 01:26 PM

Hasaranga makes the game look terrible. He shouldn't even be playing in the match with that kind of aggressive attitude. Umpires should raise complaint about him.

    Maa Thursday, 22 February 2024 09:29 AM

WHY NOT YOU BECOME A UMPIRE?? ANY CAPTAIN HABBIT IF WINS HAPPY?? LOST MEAN SO MANY PROBLEMS MAKE. NOT CRICKET BECAME THIRD CLASS GAME. NOT A GENTLEMAN’S GAME

    Yoga Thursday, 22 February 2024 09:44 AM

Gentlemen with punk hair, studs and tattoos all over them

Fashion show Thursday, 22 February 2024 04:45 PM

How about all the gold jewellery they wear while playing? I simply cannot understand the great idea behind it. Especially bowlers; in their bowling stride won't the dangling jewellery impede maximising their efforts. After each delivery, like women, the bowlers have to tuck the chain/s that have come out, inside their shirts. If these fellows want to exibit their affluence, they should seek the help of SLC who would gladly arrange a separate parade or fashion show only for this purpose for those cricketers, who can be assured that the audience will this time not be distracted by cricket as in the field.

    Jude Thursday, 22 February 2024 09:35 AM

If the batsman out of the crease it's very hard to judge if the ball is Over the waist!! However, I don't think that's the main reason why SL lost today. SL just showed up for the game, didn't play with killer instinct, period.

    Dan Thursday, 22 February 2024 09:57 AM

There's an appropriate place and a forum to comment on umpiring decisions. Certainly not the public media.

    Prince Thursday, 22 February 2024 10:04 AM

I think he should be reprimanded by the match referee. He or the officials could have checked and complained to the match referee. He has no right to tell to umpires to find a new job. Damn shame. Even in Arjuna incident with Darrel Hair, he questioned the umpire on field and took it up with the manager and match referee. He didn't make comments in the media but only explained the reason for his objection. He did not tell Darrell Hair or Ross Emerson to find different jobs. Shows his class and being the captain of the country, I don't think he is good enough to continue with this job.

Primitive and cannibalistic Thursday, 22 February 2024 04:54 PM

That's the calibre of the current generation. If not Hassaranga someone else would have made the statement. Wait and see SLC will not take any action. That's the level to which this country have fallen. We could never immagine such a statement from any of the yesteryear players, let alone the captain. The current bunch anyone is capable of it. Often even their appealing and celebrations look primitive and cannibalistic. You don't see that in any other int'l teams.

    Ceylonese Thursday, 22 February 2024 10:04 AM

Not fit to be a captain. "IF YOU WIN, TAKE THE CREDIT AND IF YOU LOSE BLAME IT ON THE BALL"

Liberal One Thursday, 22 February 2024 10:13 AM

This guy is clearly unfit to lead the team if he said something like that publicly.

    Lk Thursday, 22 February 2024 10:31 AM

Do not be judgmental and let umpire do his jobs .

    Don Thursday, 22 February 2024 11:04 AM

This must be stopped now before getting too ugly. When umpires make mistakes, there is a process. Later that umpire will be degraded and removed from officiating international matches. Hasaranga must be punished of this behaviour. They must be role models. Juniors will follow this and it would be a wild game.

    Ah Thursday, 22 February 2024 11:17 AM

Not only skill, but educated, well disciplined and who is a self controlled character must be chosen as a leader. They only will safeguard the lion flag. Otherwise we will have to bury our heads in sand.

Hasaranga bring disrepute to the game Thursday, 22 February 2024 01:28 PM

You describe a player who is not beach boy Hasaranga. Big mouth like him is better off shouting out for customers at village market, than in a cricket game. Which youngsters should follow the example of that lout Hasaranga?

    Cricketer Thursday, 22 February 2024 12:05 PM

IS HASARANGA CRAZY FOR CHEAP PUBLICITY. ? WE HAVE NEVER SEEN A CAPTAIN BEHAVE IN THIS WAY BEFORE. . IF HE GOES ABROAD WITH THE TEAM AND MAKES SUCH STUPID REMARKS THE SPECTATORS WILL HANDLE HIM.

Rajiv De Silva Thursday, 22 February 2024 12:12 PM

What a classie statement. Please play cricket don t come in front of media and show your ignorance

Hasaranga bring disrepute to the game Thursday, 22 February 2024 01:29 PM

Hasaranga is better just being in the team. You want to feel good with him as captain, or want to turn off TV when you see his antics?

    fact Thursday, 22 February 2024 12:40 PM

captain must show some maturity and decipline ,mistakes happen . this what happened when people are pick and made to play without strict dicipline

    Mario Thursday, 22 February 2024 12:40 PM

If the batsman had stayed in his crease, it probably would have been called a 'No ball'. He moved way out of his crease. Hence it is not a 'No ball'. A good umpiring call

    Bandu Thursday, 22 February 2024 12:47 PM

In our time, there was no DRS and were taught to accept "umpire is always right". As an old timer, we must realise nature deals out unfair deals and lucky ones and even out over time.

    sam Thursday, 22 February 2024 12:53 PM

He must have got paid for it

Hasaranga is a disgrace, can code of conduct violation be brought against him Thursday, 22 February 2024 01:25 PM

Hasaranga knows he is not suitable to be captain, he should just be ordinary player. His actions bring disrepute to the game, ICC should review his aggressive behaviour as it definitely bring disrepute to the game.

A true Captain in making Thursday, 22 February 2024 02:36 PM

Hats off Hasaranga, telling the truth openly. Hannibal has repeatedly favoured touring teams to satisfy the ICC to get more opportunities. We do not need timid captains. You like Arjuna have to be street smart. If Kohli umpires give everything he wants.

    Appuwa Thursday, 22 February 2024 02:37 PM

Sri lanka captain acting like a Thug! Where he belongs.

    KGE Thursday, 22 February 2024 03:36 PM

Should be suspended for a few matches. Sri Lanka lost not solely for that treason, there were a few dropped catches as well. Being captain means being mature enough to handle such a situation not throwing a tantrum, umpires are human and can make mistakes.

    Cherath Thursday, 22 February 2024 03:51 PM

BECAUSE players are supposed to abide by umpire's decision, right or wrong, as it's a 'gentleman's game' etc, there have been a few instances in cricket as well as in tennis (McEnroe was right in most objections!), where umpires have made bloopers and blunders only the very blind couldn't detect, some accidental some something else. On Steve Bucknor's blunders alone there are videos made. Hasaranga is quite within his rights to Express his dismay at the umpire's horrendous error, which decided the outcome. The ball was definitely above waist high at throat level and only an umpire half asleep wouldn't have seen it.

Hannibal the Great rogue Thursday, 22 February 2024 04:08 PM

At last we have got a true captain like Arjuna, being street smart ,like Kohli. Can you remember BC Cooray umpire? Giving favours to get visa to UK? Hannibal will now fly .

raj soma Thursday, 22 February 2024 08:21 PM

Umpires are humans and subject to make mistakes ... Cricket played before as a gentlemen game now become Money making sports .Umpires made many mistakes.. Many years before , Australia , England refused to go and play cricket in India due to so much bad decisions . Lucky Hasaranga was not playing cricket at that time...

    Sammy Thursday, 22 February 2024 08:44 PM

Whether Hasaranga is right or wrong in his views, he may be penalised for insulting the umpires. Umpires' decision should be accepted ultimately, even if he has erred. The team management I guess are entitled to give their report on the umpires, after the match but not the players. In the Nidahas Trophy match in 2018 Bangladesh had a similar complaint against Sri Lanka.

    Jamis Thursday, 22 February 2024 10:06 PM

Some of these comments show that SL people still live in the 20th century. They should just keep their opinions to themselves! Hasaranga is an amazing player. He has the X-factor critical for success in T20's. He is a real leader. Yes, 20 years ago, a captain criticizing an umpire would have been controversial. In this day an age, a captain who keeps quiet will be considered a wimp. People should get educated!

    Gee Thursday, 22 February 2024 10:16 PM

We don't have professional captains like Mahela/Sanga anymore

Oh no not like them Thursday, 22 February 2024 10:45 PM

@Gee,Mahela fought to cancel UK tour to play the IPL

Moh Sleiman Friday, 23 February 2024 05:48 AM

Guys SRI LANKA Cricket board should Educate basic Disciplin and respect to all crickerters,Because it is a SHAME for a Captain to behave in this manner,Well the CRICKET BOARD it self is a bunch of UNEDUCATED BARBARIANS,So what can you expect?
