The Australian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Paul Stephens held talks with the Veddha Chief Uruwarige Wanniyaletto yesterday in Dambana and learnt about their history and cur- rent challenges.

“It was an honour to meet with the Adiwasi community, including Veddha Chief Uruwarige Wanniyaletto today and learn about their history and current challenges,”the High Commis- sioner tweeted.

“In their efforts to both build sustainable livelihoods and maintain connection to culture and country I see parallels with Australia’s First Nations communities,” he stated.

Before stepping into any expedition in the local Veddha community in Sri Lanka, Aussies must attend to the right issue of their own Aborigins whose basic requirements have been denied by the very Australian Government and also neglected for years.

Australians use a Dignified name of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people who were the first natives of australia who are now called First Nations Communities but whereas in Sri Lanka the natives are still called Veddha Community. Why not give them a dignified status by being called Indigenous natives

All programs events etc in Australia including the National Broadcast news services begin with acknowledging the First Nation place names where it is being conducted. Whereas if we were to do this most name places would have a Dravidian name. The First Nations people in Australia are more empowered in Australia than our minorities

The Aussie Aboriginal gets more funding, benefits, and royalties. Aboriginals are to blame for themselves in being stubborn and prefer to live a nomadic life. The Veddah community in Sri Lanka has no such welfare or recognition.
