August declared national breastfeeding month

Colombo, August 14 (Daily Mirror) - The Ministry of Health and Mass Media has declared August as National Breastfeeding Month, with August 1–7 to be observed annually as International Breastfeeding Week. The declaration was made in conjunction with the global event celebrated in over 170 countries.

Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa made the announcement while addressing the national celebration and advisory workshop held recently to mark the occasion. The event featured discussions on the importance of breastfeeding, reviews of past activities, recognition of health professionals for outstanding work in promoting the Ten Principles of Breastfeeding, and other related programs.

Minister Jayatissa said that breastfeeding not only benefits the health of both mother and child but also strengthens their emotional bond. He noted that breast milk provides essential nutrients and antibodies, boosting infants’ immunity and reducing the risk of various illnesses.

Highlighting Sri Lanka’s international recognition for high performance in breastfeeding practices, the Minister credited decades of dedication by health personnel. He stressed that breastfeeding should be promoted as both a health and social value, requiring coordinated efforts from the community, media, and other stakeholders.

The Minister also pointed out the gap between maternity leave entitlements and breastfeeding recommendations, urging the prioritization of supportive programs to encourage breastfeeding nationwide. He assured that the Ministry of Health will provide the necessary backing for these initiatives.

National guidelines recommend initiating breastfeeding within the first hour of birth, exclusively breastfeeding for the first six months, and continuing alongside age-appropriate complementary foods for two years or more.

World Breastfeeding Week, celebrated every year from August 1–7, aims to raise awareness of breastfeeding’s benefits and strengthen related practices globally.
