Another accident kills 2, injures 29 in Ambanpola

In the wake of yesterday's bus accident in Manampitiya, another accident was reported this morning in the Ambanpola police area, injuring 29 passengers and resulting in two deaths on the bus, the Police said.

They said the bus was carrying pilgrims and travelling from Padeniya to Anuradhapura.

The bus crashed on to a container truck parked on the side of the road. Two people, aged 32 and 71, residents of the Thalawa area, died, and 29 were injured.

Six females and one male were admitted to the Ambanpola hospital. Another 18 females and four males were admitted to the Galgamuwa hospital.

The bodies of the deceased were laid out at the Galgamuwa hospital. Ambanpola police are conducting investigations. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

You cannot blame the government for an accident which is more than likely human error. Some of these bus drivers drive dangerously to be in front of another bus. Perhaps you are not a bus user so you know nothing about the conduct of these ill-mannered, probably unqualified bus drivers employed by money-grabbing unscrupulous, morally deficient politically patronised owners.

There is something radically wrong when issuing a driving licence. Most of these learners go through driving schools and obtain their licences. A connection of bribe between the driving schools and the Issuing authority can clearly be seen since these learners are aware that going through driving school for heavy vehicles guarantees a licence. Look at the drivers of private and government buses some of these fellows are after liquor, also driving using mobile phones, and always keep tooting their horns for overtaking, going slow to collect passengers and racing on the roads etc. Isn't it necessary to enforce discipline. The law enforcers turn their back on this lawlessness but hide behind trees or some building to charge the innocent driver by adducing different reasons for issuing a ticket so that they could comply to the number of cases to be shown to superiors. This nonsense should stop by the authorities and constructive steps taken ensuring road safety by invisible teams.

That is why tourists can not drive a rented car themselves in Sri Lanka like they do in developed countries: the roads here are too dangerous.
