Colombo,Nov. 26 (Daily Mirror) -Funds allocated for education will be gradually increased to 6 per cent of the GDP, Prime Minister and Minister of Education Harini Amarasuriya told Parliament today.
"It is true that the NPP government had pledged in its manifesto that the total funds allocated for education will be increased up to 6 per cent of the GDP. However, we never promised to implement it during our first year in office. We will fulfil this as years go by," she said.
"It is also true that I and others staged protests when in the opposition to get the then government in office to allocate 6 per cent of the GDP for education. However, we never wanted it done instantly," she added.
This was in response to a comment by SJB MP Rohini Wijeratne, who recalled that the Prime Minister was among those who fought to get the allocation increased for education.
