AG nominates two officials to assist committee probing Deshabandu

The Attorney General has nominated Additional Solicitor General (President's Counsel) Dileepa Peiris and Deputy Solicitor General Rajitha Perera to assist the Committee of Inquiry investigating Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon.

The Committee, which has been appointed to inquire into and report on allegations of gross abuse of power by the IGP, has also requested the Acting IGP via an official letter to nominate a police investigation team to support its ongoing inquiry.

This development was revealed during the Committee's second meeting, held today in Parliament, according to the Parliament Media Unit.

During the session, the Committee held preliminary discussions on the structure and conduct of its future proceedings, including the participation of relevant stakeholders.

It was also decided that the Committee will reconvene on April 28, 2025, to make further decisions regarding its next steps.

All these committees unnecessary. If he was charged for contempt of Court today in Matara for bringing a car inside Court premises when the order was not to, he is in contempt. If the car came without his knowledge, his getting into that car knowing well that the court order was otherwise, he is in contempt. This case heard quickly, he will have no defence and he can be punished sooner. That will have to end his Police career

Why such a drag in appointing members to this committee. Every day is another day delayed. Was AG sleeping all these days without appointing members to the committee. Its time the President inquires about these self imposed delays.
