6% increase in liquor prices

The Finance Ministry announced a 6% increase in Excise Duty on liquor, effective from tomorrow, as per a Gazette notification.

According to the Gazette Extraordinary, the price of a 750 ml bottle of special liquor will rise by at least Rs. 106.

In line with this adjustment, the prices of other types of liquor will also increase by 5%.

The Department of Public Finance under the Ministry of Finance has officially communicated the revised Excise Duty to the Excise Commissioner.

Many of the poor who voted NPP will be unhappy and this will lead to illicit liquor trade to boom. It would be good to keep the poor man's drink with a lesser tax, say 3%

Each time the price is increased the quality also goes down. The authorities must look into this as well and not only keep increasing the price.

If price increase is done by the previous governments people will bash the government for hitting the poor mans fun. I hear no such. Government will make a statement saying that ... Under a capitalist economy a socialist government in order to give benefits and concessions to the poor working class and to bring about " A beautiful country. Smiling People" under clean sri lanka project this decision was taken with utter reluctance and heart burn" Hope people will understand the future benefits this increase will bring and be content with little hardship for a prosperous rich country.

We brought AKD to boost local product and economy but he is going on same path of earlier governments. They are unable to control rice price at least to ease poor people. So naturally, people will select Sagith or again Ranil to enjoy minimum benefits. So no one there to rule the country like singapore. Joining with india is benefits for LAnkan people without hiding the reality

I would like to ask the ministry of finance as to how you deal with the price increase of taxes for the wine stores which already have stocks. Are those stocks entitled for taxes as well or is this a total income for the wine stores owner. This the same when it comes to the tobacco price hikes. The agents have millions of sticks stokes in their stores.

Increasing cigarette duty is fine due to health concerns. No advantage at all. Liquor does have advantages such as to forge friendships, for good health

So we are back to traditional taxing method.Create a think tank with all the professors we have to put invest in profits back into the companies ,research and development ,streamline production methods and use daylight saving methods to decrease use of electricity.
