A group of 54 Sri Lankan expatriate workers including 53 housemaids and a male household servant, who were staying in Kuwait illegally without visas, arrived in Sri Lanka this morning.
The Sri Lanka Embassy in Kuwait made arrangements for their return.
They were from Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Galle, Matara and Moneragala districts.
They had fled their places of employment agreed upon and found employment elsewhere for higher wages. However, they had been compelled to return to the county due to illnesses, family problems and the expiry of their visas.
The Sri Lankan Embassy which intervened had provided them with temporary passports and extradited them.
On arrival at the Katunayake airport, the Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau provided them with transport expenses to leave for their areas. (T.K.G. Kapila)
