Colombo, Oct. 29 (Daily Mirror) - Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) took action to destroy 20 kilograms of fish unfit for human consumption during a surprise raid at a shop in the Nawagamuwa area.

The raid was conducted by the Nawagamuwa PHIs under the Kaduwela Health Medical Officer Division. Inspectors discovered spoiled fish stored in a refrigerator, prompting the shop owner to question, “Don’t people eat spoiled fish?” Despite the owner’s response, the inspectors destroyed the 20kg of fish to prevent public health risks.

During the inspection, officers also noted that the refrigerator doors were heavily rusted and warned against using rusty shovels to remove ice.

The raid extended to bakeries, retail stores, and supermarkets in the area, resulting in nine shops being filed for selling food unfit for consumption, while several others received warning notices.

Authorities said that these measures are part of ongoing efforts to ensure food safety and protect public health in the region.
