A 49-year-old woman of Thambuttegama has died after being trampled by a wild elephant.
The state bank employee had been riding on a motorcycle with her 25-year-old daughter when she encountered the wild elephant at Mehiellewa in Thambuttegama. Her daughter had managed to run away and escape unhurt when the elephant gave chase but the victim Priyani Jayakody had fallen on the ground only to be trampled by the jumbo. She died upon admission to hospital. The wild elephant fleeing through the village had also hit two cows killing one of them.
