At least 97 UNP provincial councillors who had met the party’s Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa had wanted him to become party’s candidate for the presidential election. They made this request when they met Mr. Premadasa in Colombo yesterday according to informed sources.

Meanwhile 26 UNP back bench MPs are to request Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to name the party’s presidential candidate without delay. According to MP Hector Appuhamy they have decided to do so as many party members are keen to find out as to who the party is going to field its candidate for the next presidential election.
